May 22 - October 4Shayne Dark (b. 1952, Canada)Albright-Knox Public Art InitiativeThis installation of work is a collaboration between Albright-Knox Public Art Initiative and the Botanical Gardens. This project is made possible, in part, through the generous support of the Albright-Knox Contemporary and Modern Art Foundation Canada and Charles Balbach. Canadian artist, Shayne Dark (b. 1952), has gained considerable attention for sculptures that he creates using elements found in nature, specifically locally sourced branches, limbs, roots and trunks of trees. Dark has considerable interest in the intersections of art and the natural world, and his work provides the ideal context for this collaborative exhibition. Situating Dark’s monumental works against the backdrop of the Lord & Burnham designed conservatory and nestled in a landscape originally crafted by Frederick Law Olmsted, this exhibition site provides breathtaking installation opportunities. In addition to several large scale works placed on the grounds of the Botanical Gardens, the artist’s work will be integrated into the greenhouse displays throughout the interior of the conservatory. The natural drama created by Dark’s striking use of bold color will complement and enhance the organic surroundings of the garden, blooming together in a magnificent and harmonious display. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Albright-Knox Public Art Initiative will host a one-week residency for the artist at the Botanical Gardens September 14-20. Dark will source local organic material to create a site-specific installation. In keeping with his practice, Dark will focus on materials in the region that have fallen due to natural circumstances or as a result of the end of their life-cycle. These materials will find new life in the hands of the artist. The residency will offer direct insight into the artist’s creative practice and allow visitors to see the evolution of the work from raw materials to finished installation.
