The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens will host three Medicinal Garden Features this spring. March 18 will be the first, supporting Nutrition and Poison Prevention Month. The second will be held on April 8 in support of World Health Week and lastly on May 13, Arthritis Awareness and Osteoporosis Awareness Prevention Month will be honored.
Collaborating with the D’Youville College School of Pharmacy and Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, part of Catholic Health, the Medicinal Garden provides Botanical Gardens’ visitors with a better understanding of the importance of medicinal plants and their use in traditional, herbal and modern medicines, and strengthens their awareness of the interdependence between humans and plants. Pharmacy professionals from Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, part of Catholic Health, along with faculty and students from D’Youville College School of Pharmacy will be on hand to discuss specific topics at each feature.
March is Nutrition and Poison Prevention Month and a special Medicinal Garden Feature will be held on March 18 in from 10am-2pm. Activities include: presentations about the benefits of foods from plants containing health-promoting compounds; botanical displays of edible plants which are good for health; and common local plants which may be toxic to humans and pets.
The Medicinal Garden Feature on April 8 is in support of World Health Week will be held from 10am-2pm. Activities include: good things to eat, things to do each day to improve general health, botanicals used in traditional medicine and/or are currently used for medicinal purposes, stress relief ideas and foods that come from all over the world.
On May 13, the Botanical Gardens will host a Medicinal Garden Feature in honor of Arthritis Awareness and Osteoporosis Awareness Prevention Month. Activities will be from 10am-2pm and will include: educational presentations and displays about prevention, identification and treatment of arthritis and osteoporosis; botanical displays of plants from which current medications are derived from and which future medications are being researched.
Medicinal Garden Features are included with admission to the Botanical Gardens. Admission tickets can be purchased at the door and prices are; $11 for adults, $10 for seniors (62+) , $9 students (13+ with ID), $6 for kids 3-12, Botanical Garden Members and kids two and under are free.
